The first modern US lottery was established in New Hampshire in 1964. In other states, such as Nevada, casinos block public lotteries. In many places, the cost of a ticket can be higher than the advertised jackpot. When considering the time value of money, however, the one-time payment is often less than the advertised jackpot.
